Your Comprehensive Dental Implant Timeline: What To Expect From Treatment

It can take up to 6-12 months to get a dental implant in San Diego from Origin Dental. What happens during this time, and what can you expect while restoring your smile? Find out with this comprehensive overview of the dental implant timeline.

Step 1: Implant Consultation

The first step of getting a dental implant is a visit to Dr. Victor Tran for a comprehensive oral exam and consultation. He will examine your mouth to determine if implants are right for you. If you’re approved for treatment, he’ll begin creating your implant placement plan right away.

(Optional Step) Pre-Treatment Surgeries

You may need additional treatments like tooth extraction, bone grafting to strengthen your jaw, or alveoloplasty (jaw ridge smoothing) to prepare your jaw and mouth for surgery. If any of these treatments are necessary, Dr. Tran will discuss them with you in detail and incorporate them into your treatment timeline.

Step 2: Implant Placement

At your next consultation, Dr. Tran will clean and numb your mouth, and surgically place a dental implant into your gum and jaw tissue. The area will be cleaned and sutured shut to promote healing, and this process will be repeated if you’re getting multiple implants.

Step 3: Healing, Recovery & Osseointegration

It takes about 1-2 weeks for your implant site to heal and feel relatively normal. However, it can take up to 6 months for it to “osseointegrate,” and permanently bond with your jaw bone and gum tissue. During this time, you’ll need to come into our office for a few follow-up appointments so that Dr. Tran can ensure your mouth is healing properly.

Step 4: Building Implant-Supported Restoration

Your implant-supported restoration, such as a crown, bridge, or implant-supported denture, will be crafted by a dental lab. During your follow-up appointments, Dr. Tran will take impressions and images of your teeth, and send them to a lab where your restoration will be built.

Step 5: Placing Your Abutment

A few weeks before your final appointment, you’ll need an abutment to be placed on your dental implant. The abutment is responsible for securely connecting your implant and implant-supported restoration, and must be placed before the implant can be completed.

Step 6: Restoring & Completing Your Implant

Once your abutment has been attached and your implant is fully healed, you’ll come into our office for a final appointment with Dr. Tran. He will check your implant-supported restoration to ensure that it fits properly. Then, he will bond it into place, give you instructions on how to care for your implant, and send you home with a brand-new smile.
